Cycling kit Designs

Biiiiikes is a podcast, magazine/fanzine and forum all rolled into one. It’s being developed by myself and Interactive Designer/Developer/Illustrator Sean Lynch. Issue #0 rolls out sometime in the spring of 2021.

At heart, it’s an art and design magazine, but focused on cycling and people at all levels of cycling, not just professional cyclists. The theme will expand as the magazine progresses, since its guiding spirit will be centered around the feeling of riding your bike more than anything else.

One special feature in each publication will be a collaborative illustration of each person interviewed. I will design a cycling kit for that person, incorporating everything that makes that person idiosyncratic, important and unique. This will be featured in the final illustration by co-editor Sean Lynch, with our subject riding their bikes in their element, as it were, wearing their custom kit.

The first person we interviewed for Biiiiikes is Mexican-American rapper and hip hop producer Been Reza from Minneapolis, who also happens to be an avid cyclist. His design was based on his background and ethnicity as well as his wish to meld a skateboarding design style with the cycling world.

Here are some “trial run'“ kits I designed during each day of 2020 Giro d’Italia. Inspired by the EF/Palace Skateboards/Rapha collaboration for Education First’s professional cycling team–the first ever collaboration between a skateboard company and professional cycling team (inspiring Been Reza and his kit, too)–I decided to create collaborations between teams and unorthodox companies I would love to see sponsor a cycling team, as well as kits for teams that I felt could simply use an upgrade. (I’m available.)

Kit Front Moog.jpg

Moog should really have a cycling team. I’m sure Kraftwerk would agree.

Square kit_1.jpg

Square is a skateboard company I made up. Here is their cycling kit.

BORA-Hansgrohe’s team jersey needs help. I teamed them up with Patriae, a very small clothing design company based in New Jersey.

Bruja_kit.jpg

BRUJAS is an “NYC based feminist skate collective and streetwear brand”. They have to have a women’s pro kit.

Sunweb Kit.jpg

Team Sunweb could use an upgrade, too. This is a kit for cooler temperatures. Sunweb is a company that specializes in Alpine ski vacation packages in Europe. So the sun on the kit design has many looks–as if yer skiing morning to night, throughout the year.

Sunweb_Ventoux_Version.jpg

…And here’s their kit for high Alpine, Pyrenees or perhaps Mount Ventoux racing.

Astana.jpg

Kazakhstan’s own Team Astana needs a reboot, I feel.

Arkea2.jpg

Arkea-Samsic is a French team based out of one of my favorite French cities, Rennes. A wild, very musical city in the North. I figured this would be a good team-up with Analog Africa one of my fave record labels and boutique sound distributors, based out of Germany.

Kith:Novo.jpg

A collab between super cool Kith streetwear with American cycling team Novo Nordisk.

Legion.jpg

Love this UCI Continental cycling team team based out of Los Angeles. It features perhaps the fastest sprinter in the USA in Justin Williams (who also designed their logo). The cheetah should naturally be a part of L39ion’s look.

Ineos.jpg

Ineos are a pro team featuring many Tour de France champions. I designed a fitting alternate jersey for them.
